Summary

Papers, photographs, printed material, 1917-1976. In 1910 the brothers E.J. and W.R. Hume established the Humes' Patent Cementrion Syndicate Ltd, which became Hume Brothers Cement Iron Co. Ltd. That company was operating factories in Adelaide, Melbourne, Hobart and abroad, manufacturing centrifugally spun reinforced concrete pipes by the method patented by the Hume Brothers when it was formed into the Hume Pipe Company (Aust.) Ltd, in Melbourne in 1920. The company continued expansion in Australia and from 1922 in Malaya; the various company titles reflect the re-organization and growth of the parent body and the specialization into separate steel and concrete areas of production, and latterly into plastics. Queensland operations include factories in Rockhampton and Townsville and the company has held major contracts, relating to the Barren Falls Hydro Electricity scheme, the Mount Isa railway line, the jetty at Lucinda Point, the Mount Spec pipeline, plus many urban water supply projects, including those in Cairns and Townsville. Records are of various Australian and Malayan offices, and of subsidiary companies; there are five deposits comprising 235 linear feet and one reel of microfilm. Material includes certificates of incorporation and registration, correspondence, reports, registers of company directors, photographs, printed material.
