Summary

Journals, 1848-1851, Language Glossary. British artist, who became marine painter to Queen Victoria and the Royal Yacht Squadron In 1874, and was knighted in 1885. Brierly made two visits to Australia, and on the first visit he was invited to join Captain Owen Stanley on H.M.S. Rattlesnake on a survey voyage of north eastern Australian and New Guinea waters. His journals and examples of his art work are held in the Mitchell and National Libraries, the Melbourne Club and the National Maritime Museum, Greenwich.
