Summary

Papers, 1859 ca.1940. John Atherton 1837-1913, was born in Lancaster, England; he migrated to Australia and held land in the Rockhampton district from 1857, and in the Mackay hinterland from 1863. In 1875 he extended further north, taking up Cashmere Station formerly part of the Valley of Lagoons run, and in 1877 he settled Emerald End near Mareeba. He was also interested in mining, and discovered tin at Wild River and Tinaroo. John Atherton's family included William Atherton 1865-1949, who founded Chillagoe Station in 1887, and Ernest Atherton 1879-1955, also known as Paddy, who was M.L.A. for Chillagoe in the Queensland parliament, and minister for mines 1929-1932.

comprising 107 letters, chiefly business matters, including land and mining leases, and details of Emerald End Station. Correspondents include Robert Philp, J. Byrnes and various government authorities.
