Summary

Diary, 1844-1845. Naturalist and explorer John Gilbert came to Australia in 1838 as zoological assistant to the ornithologist John Gould. In 1844 Gilbert joined Ludwig Leichhardt's Port Essington expedition as second in command. In an attack by Aborigines at the Mitchell River in June 1845, Gilbert was fatally speared.

Diary, 18 September 1844-22 June 1845. Contains daily entries on geography, natural history and the expedition in general, also details of camp sites with latitude and longitude readings. The diary was kept to the eve of Gilbert's death on the Mitchell River in June 1845. Microfilm, one reel, copy of original held Mitchell Library. Oxley Library, State Library of Queensland.
