Summary
Correspondence and documents, 1862-1866. Public servant and politician, Robert Herbert studied classics at Oxford and then law. He was appointed private secretary to Sir George Ferguson Bowen in 1858 and was commissioned as Queensland Colonial Secretary the following year. Herbert became first premier of the colony from 1860 to 1866; during this time he was involved in various investments, including a pastoral venture in the Valley of Lagoons in partnership with English friends, the Scott brothers, and George Elphinstone Dalrymple. In 1866 Robert Herbert returned to England and held various posts to 1871, when he became Under Secretary for the Colonies, a position he held until 1892. He was awarded the K.C.B. in 1882, followed in 1892 by the G.C.B. Letters, 3 May 1863-16 November 1865, chiefly to his mother and his sister Jane. They include details of political situations in Queensland including the 1863 elections, also various official tours, the pastoral venture in the Valley of Lagoons and social events.
