Summary

Biography. English born planter, civil servant and trader, William Ingham farmed a sugar plantation called Ings on the Herbert River for a short period from 1874; he also served briefly in a government post in the town of Ingham. He turned to the local then New Guinea cargo trade and sailed for Port Moresby in 1878; he was killed later that year by natives off the Louisiade Islands. The town of Ingham surveyed in 1875, was named in his honour.
