From 1845-1848 he carried out significant exploratory work in central and southern Queensland first under Mitchell and later as leader of an expedition to the Baicoo River. In April 1848 Kennedy led an expedition to Cape York Peninsula; the venture was dogged by disaster and Kennedy was killed by Aborigines just south of the prearranged meeting place with the Ariel at Port Albany in November 1848.
