Summary
Sir Alfred Cowley managed the Hamleigh sugar plantation in Ingham from 1881, having previously farmed in the district for a period from 1875. He entered parliament in 1888 as member for Herbert and served as Speaker of the House for many years until he lost his seat in 1907, and retired from politics.
