Industrialist, company director and politician, born in Victoria in 1859, his principal interests lay in metal mining and financial matters, but he was also associated with newspaper trading and pastoral property. He was M.L.C. for Victoria 1910-1922, during which time he held ministerial office and was Leader of the Legislative Council. His directorships included Electrolytic Zinc Co. of Australasia, Broken Hill Associated Smelters, North Broken Hill Ltd, Mount Morgan Gold Mining Co., Zinc Producers Association, Melbourne Trust, Metal Manufacturers Ltd, Electrolytic Refining and Smelting Co., Hampden Cloncurry Copper Mines and Amalgamated Zinc (de Bavey’s) Ltd.
