Personal papers. W.S. Robinson was born in Melbourne, and after completing an agricultural diploma at Longerenong College and a period in tanning, he entered journalism with the Age newspaper in 1896. In the early 1900s he wrote a series of articles on Broken Hill thereby stimulating his interest in mining; he began to invest in the industry, thus initiating a business and entrepreneurial career and the accumulation of extensive financial interests throughout Australia. The collection contains records relating to mining in north Queensland, including a file of 23 letters on Mount Isa Mines, records on early Cloncurry, on Mary Kathleen uranium mining and on the establishment of the bauxite mining industry at Weipa. There is also material relating to post World War II development of northern Australia. U.M.A.
