Collected papers regarding Australian shipping, emigration etc. from ca.early nineteenth century. Charles Bateson, author and editorial manager of Mirror Newspapers. An extensive collection comprising research material for his historical publications. Includes correspondence, shipping and emigration files, statistics and registers, archival and library primary source material, newspapers, periodicals, pamphlets and reviews, maps, charts and photographs. Also drafts and final manuscripts for publication. Major topics include shipping, (international and coastal), emigration, settlement schemes, convicts, penal settlements. World War II, especially the war in the Pacific, Bass Strait Oil, there is a section regarding Queensland and current developments, tourist facilities etc. The collection includes manuscripts, files and correspondence relating to the following publications: Australian Shipwrecks, Chartmaker, The Convict Ships, Dire Straits, Early Sailor, Early Soldier, First Into Italy, Gold Commissioner, Gold Fleet for California, Spitfires Over Malta, Surveyor, also to his contributions to the Australian Encyclopedia and the Australian Dictionary of Biography; Bateson's own reviews of other writing are included. 86 cartons, one parcel.
