Summary
Papers, 1847-1895. William Brookes, ironmonger and politician, migrated to Australia in 1848 and set up in partnership with his brother in an ironmongery business in Brisbane, 1858. He was a Member of the Legislative Assembly 1863, 1864-1867 and 1882-1888, and member of the Legislative Council 1891-1898; Brookes strongly advocated the abolition of coloured labour in Queensland.
