Summary

Diary 1882-1883. Caroline Creaghe was the only woman member of the exploration party led by Ernest Favenc, which traversed northern Australia in 1883. Diary, 22 December 1882-5 September 1883, with related material 1920-1932, one box. Covers the voyage from Sydney on the Corea, calling at Queensland ports and Thursday Island, and the arrival at Flinders Telegraph Station 14 January 1883. Describes the journey from Normanton to Port Darwin, encounters with Aborigines, hardships and experiences of the party, also the landscape, stations and settlements visited, and finally the return voyage to Sydney aboard the steamer Feilung. The collection includes part of a letter from Caroline Creaghe to her father, Major G.C. Robinson, 12 July 1883, with a processed transcript of most of the diary, newspaper extracts and maps of the exploration route. MITCHELL: ML.MSS.2982.
