Summary
Papers 1814-1839. Botanist and explorer, Allan Cunningham was an assistant to W.T. Alton, manager of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, by whom Cunningham was recommended as a collector to Sir Joseph Banks. In Australia he was attached to P.P. King's coastal surveys which brought him to north-eastern waters in 1919 in the Mermaid; collection areas included Repulse and Cleveland Bays, Palm Island, Rockingham Bay, Fitzroy Island and the Endeavour River. Cunningham later made important botanical and exploratory expeditions in New South Wales and the future colony of Queensland. He died in Sydney in 1839.

Journal, May 1819-September 1822. Describes a number of survey voyages from Port Jackson along the eastern, northern and north-western coasts of Australia to Timor, and to Mauritius, made between May 1819 and April 1822.
