Summary
Papers and card indexes, ca.1948-1963. J.W. Forsyth, a solicitor by profession was an amateur historian and a trustee of the Public Library of New South Wales. He was particularly interested in early voyages in the Pacific, and the history of cartography of the Australian region. Contents: Detailed contents list prepared in the Mitchell Library. 15ff.

These contain photocopies of original documents, manuscript notes, correspondence, newspaper cuttings and magazine articles. Includes material relating to many ships and navigators, among them, Jan Cartensz, James Cook, Pedro Fermandes de Quiros, Abel Tasman and Luis v. de Torres. Also manuscript notes on the Dutch East India Company, Dutch sailing instructions, discovery of Australia and New Guinea, "Cooks debt to Torres", reasons for settlement of Australia etc. Boxes ML.MSS.979/23-26.
