Biographical entry: Nisbet, James

Summary

Reminiscences, 'Pioneering days in Queensland', 1857-1878. With letters and newspaper extracts, map, illus., poetry, pp.189, one volume. The manuscript covers Nisbet's voyage from Liverpool to Melbourne from August 1857, then Sydney to Rockhampton on the Eagle in 1859; includes a description of early Rockhampton. The major emphasis is on the writer's pastoral experience in central and western Queensland, with details of settlement and frontier conflict, bush workers and also social observations. Nisbet was employed by William Kelman on Ghinghinda Station, and was involved in droving trips to western Queensland, where he later pioneered his own run Oondooroo in the Winton district. Poor health forced him to sell out in 1878, when the reminiscences end, with his return to England. MITCHELL: A.1533.
