Summary
From the collection of Mrs May Hawton, nee de Castres, of Charters Towers. Her father, Albert de Castres established a soft drink factory in Charters Towers; the family was prominent in local social and business circles in the early 20th century, and the daughters married into the Johnson, Foxlee and Hawton families. Photographs include family ports, and groups, wedding photographs, early scenes of Charters Towers, sporting, social and musical groups. Port. of Jupiter Mosman who is recognized as having first discovered gold on the Charters Towers field in 1872. A number of photographs are unidentified, these may be of interstate or overseas subjects, de Castres family tree and newspaper extracts copied and inserted.
