Holdings cover the period 1859 to 1896, when the responsibilities of this office were assumed by the newly established office of the Home Secretary. Archive holdings are extensive, and number from COL/1 to COL1/G1; all are classified open access. They include such subjects as Aborigines and Native Police, administration of justice, communications, education, elections, health and welfare, hospitals, immigration including Pacific Islanders, land settlement, local government, naturalization of aliens, quarantine regulations, registration of births, marriages and deaths. There is a large file of correspondence between the Colonial Secretary's Office Brisbane and the Office of the Agent General, London, dating from 1859. A Guide to the Records of the Colonial Secretary's Office 1859-1896 is published by the Queensland State Archives and is available from them for 2.00. This guide is also widely held in major libraries.
