Party: Museums and Public Collections - Brisbane. Queensland Museum, Fortitude Valley, 4006
Summary
The Museum holds a quantity of written and printed records of interest to historical researchers; the following details were provided by the Curator of History and Technology. References to holdings in the Queensland museum noted elsewhere, suggest that the following listing may not be exhaustive. Correspondence, files of letters chiefly from collectors concerned with natural history, letters date from the nineteenth century; these are arranged chronologically, though are not well organized or indexed. Letters are sometimes frail, and some contain natural history specimens. Historical Photographs, including a collection by Richard Daintree; this contains a number of his North Queensland studies 1863-1870. Many of these photographs were displayed by Richard Daintree at the Imperial Exhibition in London in 1871. Botanical paintings by Ellis Rowan, some 100 items, chiefly of Queensland native flowers. New Zealand born Ellis Rowan, 1847-1922, spent many years travelling and painting in Australia. Her publications include: A Flower Hunter in Queensland and New Zealand, 1896, and The Queensland Flora. The Queensland Museum published a journal: Animals of the Queensland Museum, 1891-1911, this was replaced by Memoirs of the Queensland Museum, 1912-present. Papers in these publications deal chiefly with natural history topics. In addition the Museum has issued an annual Queensland Museum Report on Activities, from 1971. This outlines the work of the Museum, during each year. Some records held by the Museum are not available for research purposes. Researchers should apply in advance to the Curator of History and Technology for a decision on access.
