MANUSCRIPT MEMOIRS of Mr. John Edgerton, covering his life in Bowen 1883-ca.1937, pp. 15. Memoirs describe the voyage from England on the steamer the Duke of Devonshire in 1883, first impressions of Bowen, the Immigration Depot and employment by Mr. J. Isbell, a local butcher. Includes observations of Aborigines, Edgerton's experiences as mail contractor 1887-1901, the supply steamers operating in and out of Bowen, and the competition between the shippers Q.S.N. Coy. and A.S.N. Coy., also the progress of Bowen and summary of events. Mr. Edgerton was a member of the Kennedy Hospital Committee, of the Queensland Industrial Trading Society which formed the Bowen Fruit Export Co-operative Association Ltd., and served for twenty-one years as a Shire Councillor. TYPESCRIPT REMINISCENCES by M. Stevens entitled 'A Wedding Trip From Poole Island', pp. 7, photocopy. Mrs[?] Stevens came from England in 1884 to Bowen, where her sister and brother-in-law lived on Poole Island. Her brother-in-law managed the Meat Freezing Works on the island. The reminiscences describe the environmental shock of arrival in the new country, colonial life, the operation of the meatworks and the writer's marriage in Bowen. DOC. 32.

LETTER, Walter G. Mason, Sydney, to Under Secretary, Queensland, 16 February 1863, recommending the immediate settlement of portions of northern Queensland for cotton cultivation. Points to an obvious labour supply with the transportation of coloured people who have escaped from the Confederate States of America, and suggests that they would be entirely suited to such work and environment, and could be settled apart from European inhabitants in yet unoccupied areas, photocopy.
