Summary
The Melbourne Bureau of Meteorology began the collection and recording of climatic data on a national basis from 1901. Meteorological details previously recorded by colonial organizations were then incorporated in this national record. The following is an alphabetical list of meteorological observation stations which have operated in Queensland north of the Tropic of Capricorn, and for which records are held. Earliest recordings date from 1868. The list indicates the observation station, time span of recordings, completed years where relevant, and the nature of measurements taken. The latter is indicated in each instance by the following key:
0. Rainfall only, or rainfall and river heights.
1. No returns.
2. Rainfall and river heights, and evaporation class A pan returns.
3. Climatological returns (non telegraphic).
4. Long term gauge, autographic or manual returns, no daily totals.
5. Rainfall and river heights returns only (telegraphic).
6. Climatological returns (telegraphic).
7. River heights only (telegraphic and non telegraphic).
8. Autographic returns only.
9. Fire weather warnings.
For details recorded by the observation stations listed, researchers may apply to the Melbourne Bureau of Meteorology, or to state branches of the Bureau in capital cities, e.g. Department of Science Bureau Meteorology, Brisbane.
