Summary
Wangaratta Divisional Board was established in 1879 and became Wangaratta Shire in 1903; the name was changed to Bowen Shire Council in 1960, following the amalgamation of the former Bowen Town Council and the Wangaratta Shire Council. Wangaratta Shire records were partially destroyed by fire in 1964. A quantity of Bowen Town Council records were lost in a fire, ca.1912.
