Party: Local Government - Cooktown. Cook Shire Council, Charlotte Street, Cooktown, 4871
Summary
The Cook Shire Council was established in 1919, incorporating areas of the former Daintree and Hann Divisions, both proclaimed in 1879, and also part of the former Torres Division. The Cooktown Municipality was established in 1876, it became Cooktown Town in 1903, was abolished, and included in the Cook Shire in 1932. The advice was that a considerable quantity of records was held, however a coverage of holdings was not possible. Council staff provided the following summary details:
COUNCIL OFFICE
Cemetery register, January 1877-present.
Minutes of Council meetings, 1886-present.
COUNCIL WORKSHOP
An extensive unsorted collection held; the plan was to rehouse these records in a new storage building at the Cooktown airport.
