Summary

The Shire area was originally part of the Woothakata and Barren Divisions. Woothakata Divisional Board was established in 1879, it became Woothakata Shire in 1903, and the name was changed to Mareeba Shire in 1947. The Barren Division was established in 1890, and became Barren Shire in 1903. It was abolished and included in the Cairns and Woothakata Shires in 1919. In that year the offices of the Woothakata Shire were transferred from Thornborough to Mareeba.
