Summary
The Council area was originally included in the Barklay Tableland and Cloncurry Shires. Barklay Tableland Shire was established in 1914, its name was changed to Barkly Tableland Shire in 1919, and became Mount Isa Shire in 1962. In 1968 it was renamed Mount Isa City Council, and the region is now administered in two divisions: 1. City of Mount Isa, and 2. Rural areas.
