Corporate entry: Torres Shire Council, Douglas Street, Thursday Island, 4875

Summary

Historical details available are contradictory, however the following is probably correct: The Torres Divisional Board was established in 1886 and later became Torres Shire. Local government was suspended during 1942-1948 and an administrator was appointed from 1952. The Torres Shire was reconstituted in 1973; the Authority area now includes the northernmost tip of Cape York and all Australian islands, north of 11 S. latitude. Few records are held by the Council, some being destroyed during evacuation of Thursday Island during the Second World War. It was also suggested that records were transferred to the mainland, e.g. to Cooktown, at this time, but none were located in this survey.
