Summary

An extensive collection of Inspector of Mines' records held, covering all mines and batteries that have operated in the northern mining district, from ca. 1870. The district extends from Ayr to the Torres Straits and west to Corfield and Normanton. Some additional records from beyond this area are included. The collection includes material transferred to Cairns from the previous Inspector of Mines headquarters in Herberton, which includes important holdings from the State government operations: the Venus Battery, Charters Towers, and the Irvinebank State Treatment Plant. A large quantity of correspondence, reports, samples of crushings, and maps and surveys of mineral leases are also held. Printed records include:
