Party: Archives - Melbourne The Archivist, Australian and New Zealand Banking Group Limited, P.O. Box 537E, Melbourne, 3001

Summary

Archive holdings include records of the three major predecessor banks. The Australian and New Zealand Bank LTD, was formed in 1951 by a merger of the Bank of Australasia, established in 1835, and the Union Bank of Australia Limited, established in 1837. In 1970 the A.N.Z. Bank and the English Scottish and Australian Bank LTD, which was established in 1852, merged to form the Australian and New Zealand Banking Group Limited. It may also be noted that the London Bank of Australia records are held, as this bank merged with the E.S. & A. Bank in 1921, however their representation in north Queensland was slight and surviving records are few. Fairly comprehensive correspondence files exist between the general managers of the three original banks and their respective London boards of directors. Regional matters of significance, reports of visits to developing areas prior to the opening of branches, plus direct references to many Queensland regional centres will be included in this series. There would also be references to certain individual customers, chiefly those overtaken by financial difficulties. Direct correspondence from Queensland regional branches is rare, a photograph collection of bank buildings and scenes of selected townships is held, and some financial details of initial building costs are also contained in the central records of the bank's administration. Records of managerial and most other staff members are held. A listing of relevant regional Queensland branches for which records are held, with the date of foundation of the branch, is contained below.
