The Commercial Bank of Australia Limited was established in 1866; in 1883 it amalgamated with the Australian and European Bank LTD, and in 1886 it amalgamated with the Town and Country Bank LTD, of Adelaide. The C.B.A. absorbed the Mercantile Bank of Sydney in 1891. The Archives of the Commercial Bank of Australia Limited are located at the Bank's head office: 335-339 Collins Street, Melbourne. 3000. A full time archivist is not available, and researchers should write in advance to the above address, to arrange a research visit. A coverage of holdings in the C.B.A. Archives was not possible in this survey. All fourteen regional branches in central and northern Queensland were contacted by circular letter; the general response in replies received was that no records of an historical nature were held, with the exception of the Townsville branch which advised that the Banks original signature book was held.
