Summary

The company began business at Thursday Island in 1889 as a supplier of liquor and cigarettes, and extended operations to Cairns in 1899, where it was later to take over Cummins and Campbells, and Joseph Pease. In 1938 P.J. Doyle Pty Ltd was itself taken over by Carlton United Breweries, however operations have continued under the original trade title. The Companies Thursday Island operations closed in 1957. In 1923 the premises of P.J. Doyle were destroyed by fire, including some company records. The following records held at the Spence Street office relate to P.J. Doyle Pty. Ltd. Account books, from 1918. Advertising account books, from 1923. A collection of cash books, private ledgers, creditors' and purchase ledgers, 1918-present, the total collection comprises some 26 volumes. Office staff advised that the strong room of the former city premises may hold records relating to Cummins and Campbell, however attempts to gain access were unsuccessful.
