Corporate entry: A.J. Smith, Cnr. Sheaffe and Scarr Streets, Cloncurry, 4824

Summary

In association with Walsh & Co., the Smith family began operations as general merchants in Port Douglas; in 1888 a head office was established in Normanton, with branches throughout the hinterland including Burketown, Cloncurry, Julia Creek and Richmond. The present Cloncurry store was transferred from Normanton by ship to Townsville and thence by rail to Cloncurry, where it was erected in 1928. No historical business records are held, however the original plans and specifications of the building compiled by J.W. Holliday, Architect of Croydon, 1905, are held, and also some photographs of early premises.
