Party: Lutheran Church - Archives and Research Centre

Summary

The Lutheran Church has maintained a number of Churches throughout the survey area, as well as missions to the Aboriginals. Bloomfield mission, sixty miles south of Cooktown and Hope Vale just to the north of that centre, were established in 1886, and Marie Yamba mission was founded in 1888, south from Proserpine. Records of the Lutheran Church in Australia are housed in the Archives and Research Centre in Adelaide, and relevant holdings are listed below. Some records are also held in regional parishes, and of these the Townsville parish holdings are listed herewith. The advice was that St Paul's Lutheran Church, Mackay also holds records dating from the 1860s, however, a coverage of this holding was not possible. North Queensland mission records were not covered, however, correspondence with the Mission Director at Hope Vale, suggested that their principal records would be housed in Adelaide. The following is a selective listing of the large collection held at the Archives and Research Centre. Given the significance and sometimes rarity of records in this collection, the listing includes details of some secondary as well as primary source holdings.

Personal Papers Pastor P.O. Theile papers. Pastor Theile was mission director of Hope Vale (via Cooktown) Mission, based in Brisbane during the inter-war period.
