Summary
Records date from 1859 and relate chiefly to the Diocese of Brisbane. Central and northern Queensland records were maintained in Brisbane until 1882 when the Rockhampton Diocese was founded and from 1930 Townsville housed its own Diocesan records. The Cairns Diocese was not founded until 1941, having been a vicariate apostolic from 1877. Holdings in the Brisbane Archives relating to central and northern Queensland prior to 1882 are limited. Brisbane records include the correspondence of the Queensland Bishop and Archbishops, among them the papers of Bishop Quinn, 1859-1881. Bishop Quinn travelled widely throughout Queensland and his records in particular, contain useful material relating to central and northern Queensland. Archive filing cabinets contain:
1. parish records filed alphabetically, relating chiefly to Brisbane.
2. miscellaneous records, including manuscripts, biographical material, obituaries, records regarding Church leaders and issues in Church history in Queensland and elsewhere. Some printed items and photographs.
3. published material including local parish histories, commemorative publications, booklets and leaflets, chiefly regarding Brisbane Diocese. A considerable collection of additional unsorted records includes parish records, letterbooks, correspondence files, business records and photographs.
The collection also contains a number of printed items in Aboriginal language of the people of north-eastern Queensland:
