Tuesday 20th All PM had little wind which Veer'd round from South, by the East to NNE - Steer'd SSW, but got very little to the Southward on account of a head Sea. At 2 oClock soundd and ^in 35 fathom water fine Sandy bottom, being about Six Leagues from the land. At 7 oClock the extremes of the land extending from SWBS to NBW distant from the nearest shore 6 Leagues depth of water 32 fathom. At 12 oClock it fell Calm and continued so untill 4 AM when a fresh breeze sprung up at SBW, with which we stood in shore WBS 4 Leagues, our depth of water from 32 to 13 fathom; in this last depth we tacked and Stood off, being about 3 Miles from the shore which ^lies nearly north & south and is here very low and flat and continues so up to the skirts of the Hills which are at least 4 or 5 Miles in Land. The whole face of the Country appears barren, nor did we see any signs of inhabitants. Latitude at Noon 44°..44' So Longd made from the Banks's Island to this land 2°.. 22' West —
