Thursday 1st Winds between the SW and NNW a fresh gale. In the PM found the Variation to be 16°..34' East - At 8 Tack'd and stood to the Southward with the wind at west which before the morning veer'd to NW accompan'd with hazey weather and drizling rain - at day light loosed a reef out of each topsail and set some of the small sails - At Noon our Latde by account was 47°..52' So and Longitude made from Cape Saunders 1°..8' East — The New Moon made her appears last night and Tupia told us that this is New Years day at the Island, on which account we paid him the proper compt.
