James Morrison's 'account of the Island of Tahiti & the Customs of the Island' forms the second part of the journal he kept of the ill-fated Bounty voyage of 1787-89 and the near six months he subsequently spent on Tahiti under the protection of Tu Nui e A'a i Te Atua (Pomare I), paramount chief of the Pare-Aue region. The manuscript journal is now preserved in the Mitchell Library of the State Library of New South Wales.
This online edition of the 'account of Tahiti' was created using Owen Rutter's edition of the Journal of James Morrison, Boatswain's Mate of the Bounty... (London: Golden Cockerel Press, 1935), pp. 139-240. Rutter's text was photocopied and an electronic text created by applying FineReader optical character reading software to 300 dots per inch TIFF format image files of the photocopies.
The electronic transcript was then corrected by hand, retaining Rutter's reproduction of Morrison's spelling and punctuation with the exception of the long s that was represented typographically by the letter f prior to 1800.
