WOOLDINGWOOLDING, (surlier, Fr. woelen, Dutch) the act of winding a piece of rope about a mast or yard, to support it in a place where it may have been fished or scarsed; or when it is composed of several pieces united into one solid. See MAST.WOOLDING is also the rope employed in this service. Those which are fixed on the lower masts, are represented in a, fig. 1, 2, & 3. plate VI.
