Pilots were experienced seamen with extensive knowledge of winds, tides and navigational hazards in particular rivers, bays, coastal waters and sometimes the open ocean. |
Details | |
Pilots were given control over the direction of a ship's course when it entered these waters. The regulations with regard to the use of pilots by the Royal Navy in Cook's day are quoted at length by William Falconer in the article delaing with pilots his Dictionary of the Marine. | |
