The Lizard Peninsula is a high plateau with numerous coves and beaches on the coast of Cornwall. The name 'Lizard' derives from the Cornish 'lezou' or high place. Lizard Point, on the end of the peninsula, is the most southerly point of the English mainland. Historically, the Lizard has been a dangerous navigational hazard due to its southerly extent and the many rocks and reefs hidden below the waters off its high shores. Among the many wrecks off the Lizard is that of the Royal Anne, the last oared fighting ship built for the Royal Navy. The Royal Anne was wrecked set in 1721 while carrying Lord Belhaven to Barbados to take up the post of Governor. It was not until 1762 that a lighthouse was built on the Lizard. |
