| Fore was the term used by seaman to describe any part of a ship that was located near the stem. The stem was the name given to a large circular piece of timber into which the two sides of the ship were set at the forward end of the vessel. The lower end of the stem was in turn set into the ship's keel, and the bowsprit rested on its upper end. The term was also used to indicate the location of an object to other parts of a ship. The command to place something 'afore' meant to place the thing nearer the ship's stem. To describe something as 'afore the main mast' meant it was located in front of the main mast (and therefore nearer to the ship's stem). |
