Mats, covering ship's rigging |
Mat was the name given to the thick webbing woven from yarn or strands of rope. This webbing was used to cover those parts of the standing rigging which were likely to be damaged by friction from ropes used to manage the ship's sails. The strongest kinds of mats were called panches. |
