Rigging |
Rigging was the name given to the various ropes used to support a ship's masts, and to extend or reduce the amount of sail. |
Details | |
The rigging used to support the masts was called standing rigging, because it was usually fixed in position. Rigging employed in raising, lowering and changing the position of sails was known as running rigging. The various parts of both standing and running rigging had specific names that are explained by William Falconer in the entry on rigging in his Dictionary of the Marine | |
