| The Salvages, or Ilhas Selvagens as they are now known, are two groups of small group of islands in the Atlantic Ocean approximately half way between Madeira and the Canary islands. |

The largest islands in the Selvagens group are Selvagem Grande, Selvagem Pequena and Ilheu de Fora. Known since antiquity, the islands were claimed in the name of the Portuguese crown in 1438. Due to their desolate nature and few safe anchorages they quickly became known as the Savage Islands (Ilhas Selvagens). |
