| Born: 1739 Stepney, London, England. Died: 26 May 1771 at sea on the passage between St Helena and England. | ||
| Hicks was either pressed or enlisted in the navy at Ripon, in Yorkshire. However, he gave his parish of birth as Stepney, London. He served in the sloop Launceston during 1766-7 as an Able Bodied Seaman before being appointed Master's Mate. He then served aboard the sloop Hornet as an acting lieutenant from 21 August 1767, and was commissioned as 2nd Lieutenant aboard HMS Endeavour on 26 May 1768. He joined the ship's company on 3 June 1768. It was Hicks who first sighted the Bay at Wharekahika on the East Cape of the northern island of Aotearoa / New Zealand. Cook named the bay after him (see the entry in Cook's Journal for 31 October 1769). Hicks died after the Endeavour left St. Helena. According to Cook, the cause of his death was ''a Consumption which he was not free from when we saild from England'' |
