| There are ten species of seabird of the family Sulidae known as boobies, a name that probably derives from the Spanish word bobo, meaning fool, because the birds have little fear of humans, often land on ships and are easily caught because of the difficulty they have taking to the air. The family Sulidae also includes the various species of Gannet. In his run across the Pacific towards the Society Islands on his first voyage, Cook probably encountered red and brown footed boobies. |
