Fare tupapa'u

Ghost House
Related Entries
Until the missionary era, the Maohi peoples of the Society Islands buried their dead in the ground, laid them in caves or placed them for several months or longer inside a specially built structure, called a fare tupapa'u (ghost house). In the case of some high-ranking chiefs, their corpse lay within a fare tupapa'u for a year or longer. See the related South Seas Companion entry on death in Maohi society.
