Until the missionary era, the Maohi peoples of the Society Islands buried their dead in the ground, laid them in caves or placed them for several months or longer inside a specially built structure, called a fare tupapa'u (ghost house). In the case of some high-ranking chiefs, their corpse lay within a fare tupapa'u for a year or longer. See the related South Seas Companion entry on death in Maohi society. |
