Porpoise, Common or Harbour

Phocaena phocaena

The Harbour Porpoise, also called the Common Porpoise inhabits the Northern regions of the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans. It is also found in Artic waters, the Mediterranean and the Black Sea.

This species of porpoise is grey in colour and grows to between 1.5 and 2 metres in size. Adults can weight between 60 and 70 kilograms.

In Cook's time it was not uncommon for small groups of Harbour Porpoises to hunt fish in the River Thames.

While the Harbour Porpoise is not regarded as an endangered species, there has been significant population decline in waters that are fished commercially with nets.
