The city of Funchal is located on the southern side of the island of Madeira within a natural amphitheater of mountains rising to 2000 meters.

Details
Funchal has enjoyed the status of a city since 1508, and was long considered one of the most important cities in the Portuguese Kingdom.

In the mid-eighteenth century, Funchal had a population of about 5000 and served as a market place for vegetables, fruit and fish.
