FENDERSFENDERS, (from fend,) certain pieces of old cable, timber, faggots, or other materials, hung over the tide of a ship or vessel, to prevent it from striking or rubbing against a wharf, or key: as also to preserve the smaller vessel from being damaged by the larger ones.
