FLAKEFLAKE, (echafaud, Fr.) a sort of scaffold or platform, formed of hurdles and supported by stanchions, and used for drying cod-fish in Newfoundland. These flakes are usually placed near the shores of fishing-harbours. Also a small stage hung over a ship's side, to caulk, or repair any breach.
